George DeVaughn

With great sadness, we bid farewell to our father, George DeVaughn 94, who passed away peacefully in his sleep October 5, 2024. Born to Owen and Maggie DeVaughn on February 10, 1930 in Birmingham, Alabama, George lived a full and vibrant life from the beginning to end and touched many lives along the way. A pillar of strength to his community and church, his absence leaves a void in our hearts.

When he was a boy, he set his sight beyond the segregated south and vowed he would not be told where to live. He was a veteran of the Korean War. After the war, he followed his dream of moving from the south, and moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin. From Wisconsin he moved his family of 5 to Compton, California in 1962 and then Altadena, California.
In 1979, his job moved to Humboldt, Iowa, and the same company finally moved to Washington, Iowa where George bought a house where he has lived for over 40 years.

After retiring from his first job, he started working for Hy-Vee at the age of 60. He finally retired after 30 years at age 90 in 2020. He was an active member of the Kiwanis and a Sunday school teacher at Faith Baptist Church. A devoted member of the church, he will be forever remembered as a teacher to his peers and a mentor to the young. A long-time cornerstone of the business community, George imparted his leadership and wisdom on all he interacted with.

He is survived by 3 Sons: Michael DeVaughn, Gregory DeVaughn (Regina) and Anthony DeVaughn (Dommenique), 8 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, brothers Herbert and Bobby. Also, a host of nieces and nephews across the country and Europe and Australia.

A celebration of his life will be held on October 26 at Faith Baptist Church 1220 W Madison Street, Pastor Jon Rees officiating. We welcome all who knew him to join us in celebrating the life of a man who was loved deeply and will be missed.
