Everett J. Hidlebaugh

Everett J. Hidlebaugh, age 93, passed away peacefully on October 6th at Windhaven Assisted Living in Cedar Falls.

Everett was born on December 5, 1930 in rural Guthrie County, Iowa and graduated from Bayard High School in 1948. After attending Simpson College for two years Everett joined the Navy and served for four years during the Korean War before returning to Simpson College. It was there that he met the love of his life, Mary, who he married in the summer of 1956 following their graduation at Simpson. While at Simpson Everett was a star of the football team, and in 1973 he was named to the Simpson College Football Hall of Fame.

Everett went on to complete his Masters degree at the University of Iowa and in 1974 received his Doctorate degree in Education at Iowa State University. He held teaching and football coach positions at Leon and Columbus Junction before serving as the principal of the Grinnell Junior High School for ten years before serving as the superintendent of schools at Dike and then Vinton, retiring there in 1992. In retirement he and Mary resided in rural Shell Rock before moving to Arkansas where Everett was an avid fly fisherman, and in 2016 they moved to Waterloo to be closer to family.

In Waterloo Everett enjoyed attending Silver Sneakers classes at the YMCA, and during the pandemic he made artfully crafted hand made hunting long bows, a skill he taught himself by way of YouTube videos.

Everett was preceded in passing by his wife Mary in 2019. Survivors include his daughter Jennifer (John) Tabor of Soldotna, Alaska and son James (Laura) and granddaughter Charlotte of Waterloo.

Memorial services are not planned. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be directed to the Family YMCA of Black Hawk County in Waterloo.
